Max Kauffman

Kauffman Artistry
The whimsical paintings of Max Kauffman depict a subconcious avian world dotted with the semi-recognizable references of waking life. In his most recent series, “Migrations” fantastic birds previously recurrent in his works, have taken the forefront in these ethereal scenes. A host of common symbols from natural forms to those with a clearly human touch float in and out of view tying together these washed out dreamscapes. Working primarily in watercolor, gouache and ink, Kauffman’s combination of expressive and controlled techniques are well suited to his phantasmagoric subject matter. Currently residing in Denver, Colorado, Kauffman grew up in South Bend, Indiana. With frequent trips from the countryside to the city of Chicago, Kauffman developed an affinity for both the bucolic and urban – a duality repeatedly explored in his otherworldly works. Attending Arizona State University, he received an education in ceramics and anthropology, which continue to influence his fascination with visual folklore. Kauffman’s work has been exhibited extensively across the United States in both group and solo exhibitions. His paintings have been featured by prominent art blogs and publications such as Juxtapoz, Lost at E-Minor and most recently the upcoming Beautiful Decay book #6 to be released in the summer of 2011. His work has been commissioned by clients such as Mountain Dew, Nike and he has contributed editorial content to a number of art websites and publications including Hi – Fructose, Heeb, Analemma and Stuck magazine.
