The Chicago Tribune recently took on the issue of gender bias in the co-working spaces offered in the Chicago marketplace. To be honest, reading this piece caught us totally off guard! From our experience in the co-working market here in Colorado, we have not encountered this type of gender bias – whether in population or amenity offerings. So, needless to say, it was interesting to see Entrepreneurial woman speaking out on this as a “problem” in Chicago. In our opinion, the offering of amenities such as nursing rooms or targeted networking events, is common place across today’s modern workplace – not simply in the entrepreneurial co-working space. Aside from that, while nursing rooms offer a place for a woman’s nursing, we would certainly argue that this is not a gender-biased amenity given that both males and females are recipients of said nursing. Additionally, common-interest networking events have always been a popular part of the workforce culture, and in fields like tech or entrepreneurship, where the numbers prove a male-centric leaning, offering these events certainly does no one any harm. It is our hope that all populations are continuously welcomed into the co-working solar system. Whether in Denver, Chicago or otherwise, we find that the more accommodating the amenities. and the more superfluous the networking offerings, the more likely a co-working space will succeed in its market area. As a result,m we offer kudos to those offering the amenities and others as they are simply responding to the demands and desires of the market.
